In this evaluation I will be discussing my research techniques unit. When conducting research to inform our music we were required to make a questionnaire in order to plan a successful music video. I ended up getting 28 responses to my survey which I thought was pretty good however if I had pushed for a bigger sample size it may have been more effective as I would have more data. The sample was also mostly friends and family which means that the responses could potentially be biased. A lot of my questions were multiple choice or written answers but I did show one music video and ask questions based off of it. I feel that asking more questions using visual prompts would have been effective as my video concept was more based on visual aesthetics than narrative. I found that conducting the survey was fairly useful and I did get some interesting feedback, for instance people's thoughts on the music video I showed. However I didn't rely on the survey results as I did have somewhat of a vision of how I wanted my music video to be, and this overruled the results of my survey to an extent. For instance most people voted that they like narrative or concept style videos the most, however I opted for a more artist performance/montage video as I felt this would work best with the vibe of the song and would also be the best option for me with the time and resources I had access to. In my survey I also asked questions such as age and gender which seemed like good questions to ask but they were a bit generic and the data wasn't any use in terms of planning my video.
My focus group was also useful. I tried not to ask leading questions and just asked for general feedback however the participants may not have answered entirely truthfully due to being in my presence and may have been more honest if it was anonymous. My focus group was also only 2 participants which is a very small sample size so next time I would use bigger sample size to gain more extensive feedback and a bigger variety of ideas. The feedback itself was helpful however a lot of the ideas were already ideas I had myself so it more confirmed that I was going in the right direction with my work rather than giving the direction.
