Music Video Survey Results

In order to plan my music video I created my own questionnaire to gather information that I would then use to inform my choices when making my video. I decided to use Google forms as this is a free and easily accessible tool to use and easy to share to others. It also puts the results in pie charts and shows all the data for you which is helpful. After creating my survey I sent it to my friends and family and asked them to fill it out. I got 28 responses which gave me plenty of feedback when planning my music video.

The first question I asked was people's favourite style of music, in order to help me choose a song. The most popular style of music from my survey responses was indie/alternative, closely followed by pop, with drum and bass being the least popular. My chosen song ended up being 'Katy on a Mission', by Katy B, which is classed as dubstep, dance, indie pop so I feel that it would be fairly popular among my respondents.

The most popular music video style was narrative music videos, and the second most popular was concept. I would have liked to have done a narrative music video or at least concept, however I was struggling to choose a song with a narrative that didn't already have a famous/professional music video.
I didn't want go choose a song and seem as though I was just copying/recreating the official music video so I decided to go with a artist performance with an abstract and artistic focus, even though this was a less popular choice from my survey respondents.
The most popular response to this question was from time to time, potentially suggesting that for most people they will only watch highly anticipated music videos, those from their favourite artists and those that are memorable to them.

I then asked people what thier favourite music video is and why to see what stood out and was memorable to people. A lot of classic, well known music videos, such as Michael Jackson - 'Thriller', and A-ha - 'Take on Me', were mentioned. However there were also some less well known videos and videos from more modern artists. Another mentioned was 'Cornerstone', by Arctic Monkeys which has a very basic music video that features Alex Turner singing the song whilst wearing a red turtleneck and stood against a white background. The entire video is filmed in this one location. This shows that a video can be very simplistic but also effective and memorable.
The main reasons people seemed to like their chosen videos were if it portrayed a message or told a story, used interesting animation, was visually interesting, good editing, video rhythm in sync with music, nice setting and aesthetic. I decided I wanted to try and incorporate these elements into my video as much as possible within the genre I had chosen.

Next I asked participants to watch the music video for The Neighbourhood - Devil's Advocate and provide feedback on what they thought, as I personally like the video and wanted to take inspiration from it.

The feedback was very mixed, some people liked the video, some didn't. I liked the point that someone made that the green screen use is made obvious on purpose, which adds to the effect of the video. I feel like the video was made to look more abstract and look like a low budget video, which makes it more abstract and independent, which is something I had in mind when planning my video. Someone also mentioned that they liked the colours and aesthetic and that it looked like it was a part of 'the same Pinterest board/atmosphere', which is something else I wanted to focus on. Several people mentioned that they felt as though the main character was taking us on a journey. As I was planning to act myself in my music video, I wanted to take this idea in mind with my performance, for instance I wanted to use handheld camera in some shots and ask the camera operator to follow me with the camera to create movement but also achieve this desired effect.

The most popular age group was 18-20 which is also my age group. I therefore felt that if the video was appealing to me it may also be appealing to others of a similar age. More participants were male though there was a mix of both male and female.
