Research Techniques - Questionnaire

What is a questionnaire?

A questionnaire is a research technique consisting of a series of questions designed to gather data from participants about a topic or topics. There are various types of questionnaires, including;

  • computer questionnaire
  • telephone questionnaire
  • in-house survey
  • mail questionnaire

Various sampling methods can be used to select the target population, such as; opportunity sampling, snowball sampling, or self selected sampling.

Evaluation:

An advantage of questionnaires as a research technique is that they are easy to use and can be distributed to to large numbers of people relatively quickly and with low cost. Therefore the researcher can collect data from a large sample.

Furthermore, participants may feel more willing to reveal personal information as it is more anonymous than a face to face interview, in which they might feel more self-conscious or uncomfortable about answering certain questions. This impersonal element may also reduce social desirability bias for participants.

However, the limitations of this research technique include the fact that questionnaires can take a long time to design. They are also only filled in by people who are willing to take part, meaning the sample is likely to be biased and may affect results.
