The Role of the Editor
- the coordination of one shot to the next
- eliminate unwanted images, selecting only usable takes
- eliminate superfluous frames (those before the Director says action and after they say cut)
- decide the best way to transition from one shot to the next
The Editors job is closely tied to the Directors - Director will choose the way they want certain scenes to be shot.
'In The Blink of an Eye' - Walter March
Continuity editing
- establishing shot - creates a sense of time of day/time period where we are etc
- shot/reverse shot - over shoulder between conversations reactions/mystery
- 180 degree rule - camera stays on one side of the room
- 30 degree rule - move over 30 degrees
- crosscutting/parallel editing - showing things that are happing at the same time and cutting back and forth between the action
- match on action - continuing the shot of the action from a different angle
- Kushelov effect
